United Nations has pledged that it will support Somalia in the fight against Covid-19

United Nations has pledged that it will support Somalia in the fight against coronavirus hours after Somalia’s ministry of health reported the first case in the capital Mogadishu.

In a statement, the United Nations Assistance Mission In Somalia (UNSOM) has lauded the steps taken by Health authorities to control the spread of the virus in the country.

“We thank Somali authorities for promptly confirming COVID-19 case of Somali national returning from an affected country. The UN in Somalia is supporting the FGS and health authorities to prepare for and contain cases, to prevent further spread, and to strengthen health systems.” said the statement.

Somalia confirmed its first case of coronavirus on Monday after one person who had been in quarantine tested positive of the disease, Somalia’s Health minister reported.

“After quarantine and testing the four citizens from China last week, I confirm that one of them has been diagnosed with the infectious disease. The ministry is working to contain the disease,” Health minister Fawziya Abikar said.

As the threat of coronavirus disease looms large , the mission confirmed that they work with the country’s health ministry to fight against the virus
