Somaliland Ready to Be a Reliable Partner in Recognition Efforts, Says Presidential Minister Khadar Hussein

Hargeisa –  – Somaliland’s Minister of the Presidency, Khadar Hussein, has declared that the self-governing territory is prepared to be a responsible and trustworthy partner for the United States and its allies in advancing new diplomatic efforts toward Somaliland’s international recognition.

“We believe we have valuable contributions to offer to the United States and its partners,” Hussein said in a statement posted on his official X account. He emphasized that Somaliland is ready to engage constructively with Washington and like-minded allies to ensure mutual benefits in security, economic development, and regional stability.

In his remarks, Hussein also criticized Somalia’s government, accusing it of exploiting the Al-Shabaab insurgency as a political tool to influence American policymakers and to fuel instability in the Horn of Africa.

“Somalia is using Al-Shabaab as an instrument to sway U.S. political circles and to promote chaos in the region,” he alleged, underscoring what he described as a deliberate strategy by Mogadishu to undermine Somaliland’s stability and its case for recognition.

The minister’s comments come amid heightened diplomatic activity around Somaliland, with renewed debates in Washington over whether to formally recognize the territory. Proponents of recognition argue that Somaliland’s stability, democratic governance, and strategic location along the Gulf of Aden make it an invaluable ally in securing vital maritime trade routes and countering extremist threats.

Hussein’s statement signals Hargeisa’s readiness to position itself as a key partner in U.S. foreign policy for the Horn of Africa, while also highlighting the ongoing tensions between Somaliland and Somalia over legitimacy, sovereignty, and international standing.
